Puppet Show - Taipei Puppet Theater - Journey to the West (西遊記): Havoc in Crystal Palace (大鬧水晶宮)

After the location assessment, stage set-up, sound checks and rehearsals, today, at 14:00, 26 Aug, we held our first formal performance at the Yokohama Doll Museum. The doll museum, as the name suggests, is also a puppet art centre with a collection of dolls from all over the world. We had prepared a special gift, the main character of today's show, the Monkey King, for the museum. The curator said, on the spot, that it would be permanently displayed in the exhibition hall!
We indeed felt a lot of pressure to perform in a venue of the same nature. The night before, we heard from the theatre staff at the main rehearsal that the tickets were sold out. People were curious about us coming from Taiwan and were excited to see the traditional Taiwanese puppet show and live music. The audience was already lining up half an hour before the show, and the venue was packed with an audience of all ages, from young to elderly. The whole performance and the post-performance workshop were both successful. The audience didn't want to miss a thing, including the exhibition of traditional Taiwanese puppetry outside and the post-performance giveaway. The enthusiastic audience made our first hit a great success and gave us the confidence to keep going!

-Taipei Puppet Theater-

Glove puppetry is a popular performing art for young and old in Taiwan. Traditional puppet shows are performed on colourful and finely carved stages called tsai-lou (彩樓). The impromptu interaction between live drum-and-gong music and the puppeteers' palm techniques is a great way to showcase the performance styles of traditional puppetry.Established in 2010, the Taipei Puppet Theater is one of the most dynamic puppet theatres of the new generation in Taiwan. While preserving and carrying on the legacy, the troupe constantly tries new forms of expression and is gaining worldwide attention.

Havoc in Crystal Palace (大鬧水晶宮) is a representative work of the Monkey King series, based on Journey to the West (西遊記), which is well-known in Japan.
The lively and playful adventures of the Monkey King are vividly portrayed by the puppets, including window jumping, turning and flipping, transforming, and battling.
Treat yourself to a feast of traditional puppetry with live performances featuring percussion instruments, dreamy stage art, unique characters, and more!
